Betty Marshall

Betty Marshall, who opted for a XLIF® Procedure to treat her Spondylolisthesis & StenosisAge: 69
Hometown: Bessemer, N.C.
Surgeon: Dr. William Hunter
Indications: spondylolisthesis, stenosis
Procedure: XLIF®
Surgery Date: November 22, 2010

“I knew something had to be done, I couldn’t suffer with the pain. Since surgery with Dr. Hunter, I’m able to do everything I did before!”- Betty

Life prior to surgery:
Betty’s struggle with chronic back pain began several years ago. She developed osteoporosis, which worsened over the years and eventually led to disc degeneration. Betty forced herself to work through her pain at her office job, but it became increasingly difficult for her to stand for long periods of time. Her pain was the worst at night when sharp pain would radiate through her back, making it difficult to rest. Eventually, Betty read an article about Dr. William Hunter in the newspaper and sought a consultation. She tried conservative treatments like pain medications, epidural shots and exercises, which all failed to provide long term relief. Desperate for a long-term solution, Betty decided to have XLIF® surgery. Although Betty was somewhat hesitant about spine surgery, she claimed, “I knew something had to be done, I couldn’t suffer with the pain any longer.”

Situation today:
After a successful surgery in November 2010, Betty walked the day after and was released from the hospital. Although she struggled with post-op leg pain and muscle soreness, it is slowly getting better, and she is finding relief with exercises. Betty continues to walk and exercise throughout her recovery and is now able to do housework and enjoy activities like camping with her family pain-free!
